Job description

Candidates required to have experience in the healthcare industry and must be able to work all shifts, including weekends and all 5 boroughs in NYC. Tasks include the following but not limited to:

  • Assisting the individual served with household management (e.g. shopping, meal preparation, laundry, cleaning and decorating) and transportation to maximize the individual's skills, abilities and independence
  • DSP's will complete tasks required for household management; thereby, ensuring a safe, pleasant home by completing household tasks as needed, i.e. cooking, cleaning, etc
  • Promoting the health and wellness of all consumers through health maintenance and prevention strategies, accurate medication administration, knowledge of general health and safety rules, first aid and emergency procedures
  • Advocating for individuals as mandated reporters of abuse, neglect and maltreatment
  • Maintaining proper documentation
  • Enhancing the ability of the individual to lead a self-determined life by providing the support and information necessary to build self-esteem, assertiveness and independence
  • Assisting the individual in building/strengthening skills necessary to develop and maintain friendships and other personal relationships
  • Must obtain and administer all prescribed medications and accompany individuals to hospital or medical clinic when assigned
  • Observing and following through on established emergency notification procedures in a manner which insures the safety and welfare of all individuals at all times
  • Reporting to programs, other than their regular work location when assigned
  • Must be able to walk or transport oneself around to a great enough extent so as to perform the duties of the job

Skills
  • Detailed oriented, well organized and good communication skills required
  • Must be able to carry up to 30 lbs. and have the ability to assist with lifting and/or transferring individuals who need such assistance
  • Must be able to walk or transport oneself around to a great enough extent so as to perform the duties of the job
  • Knowledgeable about and utilize the range of effective communication strategies and skills necessary to establish a collaborative relationship with supported individuals
  • Knowledgeable about formal and informal assessment practices in order to respond to the needs, desires and interests of the individuals
  • Knowledgeable about the diverse challenges facing individuals (i.e. human rights) and understand their role as an advocate
  • Knowledgeable about the formal and informal resources and supports available in their community and are skilled in assisting the individual to gain access to such supports
  • Knowledgeable about crisis prevention, intervention and resolution techniques and are able to match such techniques to particular circumstances and individuals
Prior experience & qualifications
  • At least 1 yr. of experience in the healthcare industry is a must
  • Attend and successfully complete all necessary training programs as requested by the residence manager
